Celie & Sofia

Harpo, Albert's son, falls in love with a strong, independent woman named Sofia. In the exposition, Celie was jealous and envious of Sofia's strong character because she's able to stand up to any man and she refused to to have any of her rights and or freedom taken away by Harpo. Because of this jealousy, Celie advised Harpo to beat Sofia and with this, Sofia put Celie down on how she is weak and submissive. From here, Sofia challenges Celie to be a stronger individual. In the rising action, Celie and Sofia come to support each other. The relationship was improved because Celie founds out why Harpo was eating so much, wich was something that Sofia didn't know. The reason for Harpo's overeating was so that he could be bigger than Sofia and show his dominance over her. When Celie found this out, she became worried about Sofia who then separates from Harpo because Sofia could no longer take the beatings. In the climax, the two girls become closer now that they are on the same level. Sofia became a prisoner and is degraded as a person which leads to her not being herself anymore. In the resolution, the relationship between Celie and Sofia is more improved because when Sofia is present at one of Celie's family dinners, she curses out Albert and what he has done to her, which is the abuse and hidden letters. Sofia  appreciated Celie at that moment because for the first time, Celie was able to stand up for herself which was something she was never capable of doing in the beginning of the book.

The symbol that best represents the relationship between Celie and Sofia would be empowerment because throughout the book, Sofia plays a role model to Celie because she is strong willed and independent. She would not let any man or any woman bring her down but Celie, on the other hand, was the exact opposite. Celie was submissive and men have brought her character down. But as time passes and as the bond between these two woman grow stronger, Celie finds herself capable of being her own person and she learns to stand up for herself. An example of this would be when she curses out Albert for all the wrong he has done in their relationship. "You a low down dog is what's wrong, I say. It's time to leave you and enter into the Creation. And your dead body just the welcome mat I need."(199)
